Need new batteries? Going from 12V to 18V or 6V to 12V? Wiring Questions?

Trying to fix my grandson's Raptor 660. Yep, I know it is old but I have two of them so I would like to keep them going a little longer. Two incidents happened at the same time. One, the pedal switch went out and second the raptor kept running even after you turned it off. You can't order the pedal switches anymore, so I made my own. Now when my grandson gets on, it starts up, goes a foot and then the fuse blows (The 5 amp one, not the 40 amp). I have already switched out the control box from my other Raptor as well. Is there a way to test the control box to see if this is the issue? I have found a diagram on this site to simply rewire the Raptor and bypass the control box. If I do that can anyone tell me if the switches on the Raptor 660 can handle 30amps? Thanks for any help anyone can give.
