Need new batteries? Going from 12V to 18V or 6V to 12V? Wiring Questions?

Hi everyone,
My daughter has a 12V jeep and it spent last winter in one of those temporary car garage. Long story short, something happened to the pedal switch and it is acting up. It is one of those 6-pronged switches and the pedal is just a piece of plastic pushing down on it.

It looks a lot like this switch :

I found out that I could just add a wire between two of the poles and the car went back to working almost normally.

I say almost normally, because the jeep hiccups a lot. Sometimes it goes forward, sometime it doesnt. So my question is: can this be caused by the switch, or am I looking at something worse?

Also, is there a good parts supplier in Canada? The linked switch is not available in Canada.

I'll also post about my grinded gear on a 6V quad in the mechanical forum.

Cheers,
