Need new batteries? Going from 12V to 18V or 6V to 12V? Wiring Questions?

I picked up a Razor Go-Kart for free, and now know why.

It came with dead batteries, so that was job 1. Replaced the batteries, hooked everything up, and nothing. Then a few seconds later, it sounded like a cherry bomb went off under the motor cover.

Checked it out and the controller has some melted wires... figured that was the issue all along. Ordered new controller, hooked it up, and POP... same thing.

It complety exploded the capacitor.

The motore seems fine, I've hook it up direct and it runs great.

I've got another controller on the way, but don't want to keep feeding it parts.

I can't see any melted wires, but thoughts on what it could be? I've checked voltage and am at 24V.

I would double-check the battery/wiring polarity -- I suspect positive/negative are reversed. This could be due to changes from the previous owner or maybe due to poor markings. I don't know how clearly those are marked but it's very unusual to have capacitors to explode and that's one of the only things that will do it.
