Hello guys and thanks in advance for any help you may be able to give!

I have a Power Drivers Trail Tracker that was a gift to me when I was a child and is still laying around but the batteries have disappeared over the years. I'm now trying to get it operational so that my son can have as much fun as I did. I have put voltage to both motors and they both turn fine, I just need to get some voltage put through the right switches and get everything working right.

I would like to rewire so that everything still operated the same but I can just put any battery in. Currently it is wired for 2x 6V batteries, with a hi/lo switch and forward/reverse switch on the dash, and a foot pedal with a motor on each rear wheel. My hope is to rewire so that I can just have 2 battery leads and put any battery in with all switches still working. My thoughts right now are to wire so that the hi/low switches the motors between series/parallel but need some help figuring out exactly how it should be done. I attached a schematic I drew, but if you need any more information I can definitely provide more. Any help anybody can provide would be greatly appreciated! Thanks again in advance!
