I started on the old Barbie Escalade today. My Goodness! BTW- I paid $30 for this, and after finished with Phase 1 I should likely have $80 into it.

Phase 1: Paint - Going with Krylon Outdoor/Indoor Watermelon and Black
New Chrome wheels
New Original Decals off a Black Escalade- black & silver set

Phase 2: Headlights
Tailights
18V

Phase 3: Stereo and Speakers

all the small parts are not in this picture

Tomorrow I will start painting all purple parts black and all smaller pink watermelon. I don't know that I'll get to the body this weekend.

This will also be my first project 100% prepping with Heat Gun. I don't want to sand. :P So we'll see how that test goes.

This thing is no joke and is going to take a few weeks. I painted all the black parts today. The prep only with heat gun failed pretty quick. alot of the pieces can't handle the heat gun, so I spent quite a bit of time sanding. I am just really hoping to avoid sanding body. The blacks came out well, but minor flaws as with any black paint. you see everything. I used 3 cans of black paint. Ouch, how many Watermelon am I going to need. Mind you I haven't done the seat yet which is going to be just black satin so that makes 4 cans of black.

No ya tell me ... I'm all done now.

Should I switch paints for the pink? Which brand is lacquer? I have to do a base coat anyway.

Laquer over enamel is bad. Enamel over laquer is fine. I have used both of these with great results. I also use the Rustoleum Filler Primer as a base for most everything I shoot. Laquer isnt available in alot of colors so the watermelon you got is gonna have to be Krylon. Its enamel but its a great color.

OK, I will keep this in mind for future projects, Like my eliminator cage.

I will stick with the Krylon Watermelon as its the pink I wanted, didn't want hot pink exactly so I think it will look nice. I'll just brace myself for how many cans I go through. I am going to start some of the pink parts tomorrow. I should buy a respirator. I am still floating from fumes.

Yes you do need one. One similar this is what I use. Another benefit to laquer is little to no overspray.

Ugh. I am losing steam on this one. After 2 days and 8 cans of paint, I am only half done and have to start over on one door.

Everything small(er) is painted. I still have left the 2 larger front end pieces and the whole body. Which to me screams another 7 cans of paint and an even more severe headache.

I went ahead and ordered a light kit today so I am not super rushed, but will likely finish paint by the end of the week so it can cure for a good week.

So far, no heat gun prep--cries-- the plastic is just too soft. I am praying I can use it on the larger pieces.

This is my first paint job using Krylon indoor/outdoor over fusion, and personally...I will try to always use fusion from now on. I am not in love with the paint. I'll revisit my opinion once its cured.

For the accent- I tried using a paint pen and it ended up florescent pink, so had to go old school brush and hand do it all so that it would match.

Can you tell I am stalling getting back to work

Heres a few progress pics--the pink refuses to capture true color

For the chrome accent on this I bought Modelers Chrome Paint! It worked great, I am going to try and use that for a few touch ups on the old wheels...

I adore stitching too... This is somewhat funny, but "most" of you know I am a girl, Well, my other side job is I run a sewing business. So I very much have a design & fashion background. I use alot of contrast stitching and crazy designs in the things I sew , so This spews over into power wheels.
Its funny to me how parralel my two hobbies (cough...addictions) are.

AHHHHH! I hear angels. I am DONE. Done. Done. (with paint anyway)

Last coat of clear is drying before coming inside. I even fixed the few pieces that had issues. So now I wait for curing and lights to come 8-)

On the left I am going to have a custom black skull with bow made, and then I'll make a license plate.

The grass pattern on the tires suggests that the tires are not making contact on the outside of the wheel which makes me believe that the axle is bent.

gwinnythepooh wrote:Lol, no the axle isn't bent but the kid we bought it from was really fat and maybe there was just more weight in the middle.

LOL. Ok. If you say so. Ever roll a pool que across the table and it wobbled? Like your axle...lol
Nice work on the vehicle btw. Looks great and your attention to detail is continuing to show. Except for the bent axle. lol

The ride looks great! I'm actually trying to do the SAME EXACT mod for my daughter's second birthday (with some color exceptions of course). I just got the same version car for her from a friend. How'd you get the stickers printed? I have 1- 1/ weeks to get everything done. LOL. I'm a relative novice but I'm good at following instructions... How'd you put in the rear lights? Where'd you get those from?

Well, I will be glad to help in any way I can but first, your kind of up a creek on time.

A good paint job you're looking at least 2 weeks. Dissasembly will take over an hour. Sanding will take 5-10 hours. Painting will take days. and you can't reassemble until fully cured which is no less than 7 days after final coat.

The stickers I got stock sheets from mendingshed.com, and the black skull was a custom order from madmaxdecals on here.

This is a HUGE project. It was equivelant to paint 3 other powerwheels.

I also ordered new wheels from mendingshed.com and those make a huge difference (the chrome rims)

The lights are a kit I ordered from nikg on here, WONDERFUL And easy to install! but they too will be more than a week out on shipping...

Now Running 18V YAY!! I think its OFFICIALLY done. 8-)

Here's my battery situation for the time being. I have several good stock batteries still so I just added a 6V to this. I have velcro straps that I will wrap around stock holder bar and that will keep battery secure. Nice though that the battery fits right there with Hood closed. Oh, I guess not totally done, I will be installing a charge port so I don't have to lift the hood.

Gwinny,

Maybe I missed it earlier in the thread, but how did you do the stitching on the seats? Did you use a modelers paint brush and paint to do it by hand?

How has this held up with 18V?

I got one of these for free and I could use your pic as a before pick they looked exactly same. It is sitting outside all apart and most of it sanded..... more than I was thinking it was going to be..... I have had a horrid time trying to find the fusion in the watermelon so I may end up going blue with some 3m carbon fiber vinyl trim on it. My son keeps telling me GET BLUE DADDY! Girl says.. NO PINK!!!

Its held up great. only had a blown motor once when someone tried to drive through muddy grass with the lack of no traction... otherwise- its ran a ton and seems just fine!

I didn't use fusion, I used a fusion white base and then regular krylon Watermelon.
