Shifters

The shifters in Battery Powered Ride On (BPRO) toys are used to operate one or more switches. Most Power Wheels and Peg Perego BPROs use Double Pole Double Throw (DPDT) switches capable of carrying the high current needed, directly to the motors. Most Little Tykes, Safety First, and Chinese brands use low current switches, which send signals to a circuit board, which in turn, operates relays that carry high current to the motors.

The following is an example of a typical 12V Power Wheels shifter. This shifter is from an Extreme Machine:

A cam connected to the opposite end of the shifter arm passes over two high Amperage switches. This design assures that each switch can only be operated while the other switch in the correct position, preventing short-ciruits.

Throttle Pedal

The Throttle Pedals in Battery Powered Ride On toys operate a switch. Electrical Components

The three switches shown above, are used to redirect electrical current, in order to each provide one of three main functions:

1. Throttle (or Foot) Switch - Starts and stops vehicle travel by either routing electrical current to the motors (go), or shorting the motor leads together which provides resistance to the motors (stop).

2. High/Low Switch - Changes the circuitry of either the batteries (usually older designs), or motors to be in parallel or series, which provides either half battery voltage (low), or full battery voltage (high).

3. Forward/Reverse Switch - Changes the polarity of the motor circuitry to change the direction of motor rotation, which causes the vehicle to travel in either a forward or reverse direction.


The following are examples of the most common wiring configurations found in BPRO vehicles which do not utilize circuit boards in the 'drive-train'.
