for smaller 6v vehicles that NEED to be upgraded to 12v.

We got a Lil Quad for free a few years ago, and the kids still like riding so I'd like to make it last by making it a 12V. I thought I could just buy a 12V battery and splice the old 6V connector to it, but I see many posts about wiring a fuse to the stronger battery. I'm not sure how to do that, or what kind of fuse. Can someone help with a pic or detailed instructions?
Also, right now we are using the blue 6V 4amp battery. Does it matter which 12V battery I upgrade to?
