vehicles with a circuit board controlling the motors

My son's have 6v landrover defenders that are waaay too slow so I've been reading about getting more speed by using lithium batteries.

What I did was replace the 390 6v motor and gears for a 550 12v 30000 turn motor and gears. There is only one motor that powers one rear wheel.

I added an inline fuse to the positive wire going to the 18v lithium battery and removed the trip switch.

It would go fast as hell but you could smell the motor getting hot...after 10 mins lots of smoke and the motor was toast!

I'm thinking that a 30000 turn 12v motor is too much? Would heat sinks and a fan help? The rear wheel getting power was struggling to grip so I'm guessing traction wasn't helping.

I appreciate any help.

Thanks. Tom
