vehicles with a circuit board controlling the motors

I have a national products Hummer H2, it has a 6v battery that does not last long at all, nor is it very powerful. My son is 5 years old, so he does not need to go 100MPH just yet. My question is is there some kind of "kit" i could buy, or how can I upgrade the battery while keeping it simple. Would buying a large 6V battery do anything for me? Or would I need to buy another 12V? I am clueless to how to do an upgrade, so any help to point me in the right direction would be great!

I have read someone else replacing the 6V motor with a 12V motor. Then they upgraded to a 18V battery. I am not 100% sure if they guy had the same model as I do.
