To make my connections trouble-free, slide heat-shrink onto wire first, then I strip back insulation (without cutting the wire) about 1/2" and open-up the strands by twisting in opposite direction their twisted, then I take the next wire that I'm joining and with about 1/2" stripped back and weave into, twisting new wire around the spliced wire. Solder these, then slide heat-shrink over and seal heat-shrink. If coming from a spade connector from a plug, I remove the connector from the plug in the back, and remove the old connector, solder the 2 wires together, and crimp into a new connector and put back into the plug. (I ordered the spade terminals off flea-bay that lock into the plugs like the originals.
