Need new motors? Grind a gearbox? Adding teeth to a pinion?

Was planning on boosting my 3 yr olds corvette in a bit, but he loves to jam it from forward to reverse and back at full tilt. Sure enough something broke and it only works in reverse. Any guides or videos out there on opening it up for a novice? Thanks!

This shows the Dune Racer, but the Ford trucks, the jeep, many others use similar mechanisms. You likely need to replace the switch. In my son's mini cooper, the switch just quit working one day. I had to pull it out of the car, dunk it in water, warm it up with a heat gun to loosen the tabs and disassemble the switch. While apart, I brushed the contacts with a stainless brush reapplied dielectric grease, and then reassembled. It would keep working for a few months and I would have to repeat.
